The Danish National Symphony Orchestra and Chief Conductor Fabio Luisi open the season with cosmic visions, musical transformations and divine love.
The Russian composer Alexander Scriabin was ahead of his time when he created his breakthrough orchestral work Prometheus in 1910. In the powerful narrative of the god Prometheus, who stole fire and gave it to humanity, notes were insufficient for the visionary composer. He imagined the music being supplemented by shades of coloured light, produced by what he called a ‘colour organ’ (clavier à lumières). Scriabin did not live to see this realised himself, but in DR Koncerthuset we bring the composer’s dream alive with spectacular kaleidoscopic illumination of the Concert Hall!
The virtuoso piano part of Prometheus is played by the great French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, last year’s recipient of the Léonie Sonning Music Prize.
In all three works of the opening concert, transformations take place. The old world has to die and give way to a new one in Strauss’ Metamorphoses, while in the music from Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde it is love itself which raises humanity to the divine.
